Printable Cake Writing Templates

This is a reader-generated idea from Lyn Harrison, a home baker and subscriber of this blog who recently emailed to suggest that I make some templates of my wonky style cake writing font and put them up here on the website for people to download so they can practice cake writing with chocolate. Thanks for the great idea, Lyn!

Chocolate Cake Writing Templates
This download comes with four free chocolate cake writing templates of the wonky cake writing font including guides for writing the uppercase and lowercase alphabet in chocolate as well as the most common cake decorating inscriptions including:

  • Happy Birthday
  • Happy Anniversary
  • Congratulations
  • Best Wishes
  • Bon Voyage

How to Practice Chocolate Cake Writing

  1. Tape a piece of parchment or wax paper to the bottom of a cookie sheet. Only put tape on the corners.
  2. Put the cookie sheet into the refrigerator or freezer and let it sit there and get cold for at least a few minutes.
  3. Prepare your melted chocolate in a parchment paper piping cone. For more on how to do this, see my cake writing tips.
  4. Remove the cold pan from the fridge and slip the template under the parchment or wax paper so that you can see it but not touch it.
  5. Keep practicing. If you want to practice a certain letter or phrase over and over, leave the template sticking out from under the parchment enough so that you can slip it around and rearrange it as you work.  Then you can repeat the same letter or phrase for as long as it takes to get it right.

The point of getting the pan cold is that it will mimic a cake (presuming that you keep your cakes cold while working, which incidentally is the best way to make a stable cake). Also, it will encourage the chocolate to set up quickly so that the letters hold their form instead of spreading out.

Lyn also had a tip, which is that you can write your inscription on parchment paper using the above system, chill them for a few minutes, then use an offset spatula to slide them onto the cake. That works great for people who don’t feel ready to write directly onto a cake. I’ve also used the same method to apply chocolate writing and monograms to the vertical sides of cakes. I’d recommend always making some extra letters when doing this because chocolate is fragile and can easily break.

Once you get more proficient at chocolate cake writing, you can begin piping inscriptions directly onto cakes!

  2. Hello, thank you for tips on chocolate. I have a question, I have just made a dark chocolate plague and as I am still not that confident in writing with chocolate I have written my sentiment in white chocolate on parchment paper which I am happy with. Can you advise me how do I glue the write sentiment now on my dark chocolate plague? Can I use edible glue? Many thanks Perth WA (Irene)
